What is CDS?

The Combined Defense Services (CDS) provides excellent career opportunities for aspirants who have a strong feeling of courage and patriotism in them. UPSC conducts CDS examination, twice every year for the selection in Indian Armed Forces, Army, Navy and Air Force. So, it is called as Combined Defense Services.

The selection process consists of a written exam and personality test by the Service Selection Board. After the final selection, the candidates are sent to, depending upon their choice indicated in the application forms and merit list ranking, one of the following institutes for orientation training:

Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
Naval Academy, Goa
Air Force Academy, Begumpet, Hyderabad
Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai

Those joining the first three institutes get permanent commission, however cadets passing out of OTA get short service commission. Further, OTA – Chennai is the only Training Academy for Women Army Officers.

You can take the CDS Entrance Examwhile you are in final year of Graduation / possess any Graduate Degree. Clear the SSB interview, be medically fit and join IMA as a Direct Entry subject to meeting all eligibility conditions and availability of vacancies. Only unmarried men and women can apply for the combined defense services, except in the case of Non-Tech Men for OTA Chennai.
