With the commissioning of first female fighter pilot, the Indian Army has started a new trend of including women in combat. When Avani Chaturvedi, Bhawana Kanth, and Mohana Singh got inducted in Indian Air Force fighter squadron on June 18, it was a historical moment for the entire nation. This huge step provides great inspiration to young girls dreaming to join Army. A few details on eligibility for women to join Indian Armed Forces are given below.
The Union Public Service Commission conducts Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination twice each year for admission into Officers Training Academy (OTA).
If you are a NCC Women Cadet, then you can take NCC Special entry exam. For that, you must have completed Degree with minimum 50% aggregate marks. The age bar is 19-25 years.
If you have completed LLB degree, you can try the JAG exam, for which, the age limit is 21-27 years.
The Indian Air Force conducts Air Force Common Admission Test twice per year. Selected candidates the undergo Air Force Selection Board Interview. Qualification: Should have graduated with Physics and Maths in 10+2 exam.
Short Service Commissioned Officer under University Entry Scheme (UES): The candidate should have completed B.Tech or B.E. in naval architecture, Mechanical, Civil, Aeronautical, Metallurgical, or Aerospace engineering with 60% aggregate marks. Age limit is 19-25 years.
SSC Naval Architecture: Applicants should have completed B.E. or B.Tech in Computer Science, IT, Electrical, Electronics, or Mechanical engineering, or M.Sc. in Physics, Maths, or Computer application with 50% aggregate. Age limit is 21-25 years.
SC – ATC: Candidates should have completed B.E. or B.Tech in any discipline with 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University, with Maths & Physics at 10+2 level. Age limit is 19½-25 years.
SSC – Observer: The applicant should have completed B.E. or B.Tech in any discipline with minimum 55% marks from a recognized University, with Maths & Physics at 10+2 level. Age limit is 19-24 years.
SSC Logistics: Candidate should have completed B.E., B.Tech, MBA, B.Sc., B.Com, or B.Sc. (IT) with First Class and a Post Graduate Diploma in Material Management, Finance, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management. Age limit is 19½-25 years.
SSC Education: Candidate should have completed B.E., B.Tech, MSc., MCA, or MA from a recognized institution. Age limit is 21-25 years.
Apart from these, women are also recruited by the Indian Coast Guard into various posts.
