Medical Standards and Fitness Criteria

What does the Indian Army look for in a candidate?

A candidate should have robust physique and good mental health. Chest should be well developed having minimum 5 Cms expansion. He should have normal hearing with each ear and good binocular vision in both eyes. He should be able to read 6/6 in distant vision chart with each eye. Colour vision should be CP-III. Should recognize red and green colours. Should have sufficient number of natural healthy gum and teeth i.e. minimum 14 dental points. Should not have disease like deformity of bones, hydrocele and varicocle or piles.

Now, you may be wondering why the medical standards are so stringent? This is not without reason.Being in the army, one would be exposed to extreme conditions, which would be physically demanding. A soldier who is not medically fit would be a liability to his team and would pose a great threat to himself as well as the the mission.

Physical Fitness Tests(PFT)
To determine the Physical Fitness, the following tests carrying 100 marks are held :-

(a)  1 Mile Run (1.6 KMs)
(b)  Pull-Ups
(c)  Balance
(d)  9 Feet Ditch

Marking system is as follows :-

(a)  1 MILE RUN – this is to test the candidate’s endurance.

The criteria below is for Soldier – GD position.

(i)   5.40 Mins and below                       60 Mks
(ii)   5.41 Mins to 6.00                            48 Mks

For Soldier (Technical/Clerk – Store keeper/Tradesman/Nursing assistant) if the candidate completes 1.6 KMs in 5 minutes and 40 seconds he gets 60 marks, if he takes more than 5 minutes and 40 seconds but less than  or equal to 6minutes, 20 seconds he gets 48 marks. If he exceeds 6 minutes, 20 seconds, he fails the test.

In case the run test is conducted on a hilly terrain the following dispensation applies:-
Between 5000 Ft to 9000 Ft – Add 30 Seconds
Between 9000 Ft to 12000 Ft – Add 120 Seconds

(b)  PULL UPS – this is to test the candidate’s strength.

(i)   10 and above                                 40 Mks
(ii)   9                                                     33 Mks
(iii)  8                                                     27 Mks
(iv)  7                                                     21 Mks
(v)   6                                                     16 Mks

(c)  BALANCE  Should be qualified and no marks are awarded. This is to test the candidate’s agility.

(d)  9 Feet Ditch    Should be qualified and no marks are awarded. This is to test the candidate’s lack of fear.

Medical Standards :-
