Eligibility Criteria for Soldier / JCO – Physical Measurements

Continuing on the previous article on the Eligibility Criteria for Soldier/JCO – Age and Education, let us look into the physical measurements that the army expects the candidates to have as a minimum critieria.

As mentioned earlier, the physical critieria (Standard Minimum Height, Unexpanded Chest and Weight) vary depending on the region you belong to.

The entire country has been divided into six regions – Western Plains Region, Eastern Plains Region, Central Region, Southern Region, Western Himalayan Region and Eastern Himalayan Region. The minimum physical standards for the various regions are as follows:

Western Himalayan Region consisting of Jammu & Kashmir, Himanchal Pradesh, Punjab Hills (Area South and West ofthe Inter State Border between Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and North and East ofRoad Mukerian, Hoshiarpur, Garh Shankar, Ropar and Chandigarh), Garhwal and Kumaon (Uttarakhand):-

Height for Soldier GD and Tradesman – 166 cms

Height for Soldier Technical and Nursing Assistant – 163 cms

Height for Soldier Clerk and Store Keeper Technical – 162 cms

Chest (for all categories) – 77 cm (82 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Weight (for all categories) – 48 kg

Eastern Himalayan Region consisting of Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Assam and Hill Region of West Bengal (Gangtok, Darjeeling and Kalimpong Districts):-

Height for Soldier GD and Tradesman – 160 cms

Height for Soldier Technical and Nursing Assistant – 157 cms

Height for Soldier Clerk and Store Keeper Technical – 160 cms

Chest (for all categories) – 77 cm (82 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Weight (for all categories) – 48 kg

Western Plains Region consisting of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh,Delhi, Rajasthan and WesternUttar Pradesh (Meerut and Agra Division):-

Height for Soldier GD and Tradesman – 170 cms

Height for Soldier Technical and Nursing Assistant – 170 cms

Height for Soldier Clerk and Store Keeper Technical – 162 cms

Chest (for all categories) – 77 cm (82 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Weight (for all categories) – 50 kg

Eastern Plains Region covering Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Orissa:-

Height for Soldier GD and Tradesman – 169 cms

Height for Soldier Technical and Nursing Assistant – 169 cms

Height for Soldier Clerk and Store Keeper Technical – 162 cms

Chest (for all categories) – 77 cm (82 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Weight (for all categories) – 50 kg

Central Region including Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Dadar, Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu:-

Height for Soldier GD and Tradesman – 168 cms

Height for Soldier Technical and Nursing Assistant – 167 cms

Height for Soldier Clerk and Store Keeper Technical – 162 cms

Chest (for all categories, except Soldier Technical) – 77 cm (82 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Chest for Soldier Technical – 76 cms (81 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Weight (for all categories) – 50 kg

Southern Region consisting of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Goa and Puducherry:-

Height for Soldier GD and Tradesman – 166 cms

Height for Soldier Technical and Nursing Assistant – 165 cms

Height for Soldier Clerk and Store Keeper Technical – 162 cms

Chest (for all categories) – 77 cm (82 cms with 5 cm expansion)

Weight (for all categories) – 50 kg

JCO Catering (ASC) / Survey Automated Cartographer (Engineers) / Havildar Education – As applicable to soldier General Duty for various regions.

This covers pretty much the entire India. However, the Indian Army does have some relaxation in the physical standards for candidates from certain regions/tribes as well as sons of people who have served the Army. This will be dealt with in the next article.
